The recent amendment proposed by the EU Council to the Water Framework Directive (WFD) (amending directive) adopted on 17 February 2026, introduces stricter pollutant monitoring requirements, expands the list of regulated substances (including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, bisphenols, and PFAS), and strengthens reporting and effect‑based monitoring across the EU. These changes create both challenges and new opportunities for innovation in real‑time sensing, advanced analytics, and next‑generation monitoring tools.
