What is your contribution to the project (what’s your project part about)?

imec provides advanced expertise in sensor technology, assembly and system architecture for the BioSensei project. The team at imec is responsible for:

  • Safely integrating living biosensors into the optical sensing platform
  • Establishing and operating the ML-I laboratory, which is authorized for work with genetically modified organisms (GMOs), enabling the validation of biosensors in preparation for deployment
  • Coordinating experimental planning, device assembly, and quality control for biosensor development.
  • Real time data transmission of the measurements with the Senseiver platform

What’s the benefit/opportunity for society from the BioSensei research project?

Biosensei is enabling early detection of traces of environmentally dangerous analytes through innovative biosensing technologies. It acts as a first alarm signalling contamination of river water. Thus, it is Improving environmental safety by providing actionable, real-time data.

What are the scientific advancements you most look forward to in this field of research?

Through rigorous biosafety protocols and transparent research practices, we look forward to demonstrating that GMO technologies can be developed and applied safely and responsibly. By enabling real-world environmental benefits with clear communication and validated results, this project helps build public trust and reduce stigma surrounding the use of GMOs.
