At the Bioprocess Engineering Group, we develop innovative bio-based processes. Specifically, within the Biomanufacturing and Digital Twins theme, we optimise the bioconversion process in a holistic manner considering the microbial platform, the conditions within and their remote control, the biotransformation itself, and the implications beyond. Led by Prof. Dr Vitor Martins dos Santos and Dr Enrique Asin-Garcia, our team develops and deploys the biological components (bioware) of the BIOSENSEI biosensors.

Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (FR)
Partner
Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA) is a French research-and-technology organization (RTO) with activities in energy, IT, healthcare, defence and security. In BioSensei CEA-Leti institute tackles critical challenges such as healthcare, energy, transport and ICTs. Its multidisciplinary teams deliver solid expertise for applications ranging from sensors to data processing and computing solutions, leveraging world-class pre-industrialization facilities.

Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Neuchâtel, CSEM is an internationally recognized innovation specialist with over 600 employees across six locations in Switzerland and more than 200 registered patents. We develop disruptive technologies with a high societal impact in the fields of precision manufacturing, digitalization, ultra-low-power electronics, optical elements, AI, and sustainable energy. We then transfer these innovations to industry partners in a variety of sectors, including renewable energy, healthcare, watchmaking, and aerospace, or encourage start-up creations. As a public-private, non-profit organization, our mission is to support innovation in Swiss companies and strengthen the economy through ongoing collaboration with leading universities, research institutes, and industrial partners.

Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (ES)
Partner
The CSIC team that participates in BIOSENSEI belongs to the Instituto de Microelectrónica de Barcelona (IMB-CNM) and is led by Dr. Cecilia Jimenez-Jorquera and Dr. Josep Maria Margarit, experts on chemical sensors and artificial neuronal networks. The biosensors developed in the project will be combined with neuromorphic intelligence to process continuous multimodal sensor measurements at the edge and provide customizable, early assessment of (a)biotic water pollution with high accuracy, in situ and in real time.

Cork County Council (IE)
Partner
Cork County Council (CCC), Ireland, is a Local Authority and thus the main vehicle of governance and public service at local level. The organisation provides a broad range of diverse services to approximately 360,000 citizens. Some services are well publicised, for example: Housing, Roads, Planning, and Environment, but there are a range of other quality services that we provide to our communities, such as Libraries, Fire Service, Community Funding, LEADER, and Arts and Heritage. Additionally, Cork County Council leads the Atlantic Seaboard South CARO, which supports and coordinates climate action undertaken by the five Local Authorities of Clare, Limerick, Kerry, Cork City and Cork County. This is a key national role in coordinating climate mitigation and adaptation actions across the region and is essential to adequately and effectively respond to the challenges of climate change. Working together with other European partners on the Horizon Europe BIOSENSEI project, Cork County Council will support the Tyndall National Institute with a user case scenario to test and validate new sensing technology.

National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (NL)

Two RIVM Centres work on the BioSenSei project: The Centre for Safety of Substances and Products and the Centre for Environmental Quality. The former provides advice on risk management of chemical substances, products and gene technology. The latter provides information on environmental quality and conduct independent scientific research.
